Early 2023 and late 2024 I embedded with anti-junta rebels in Eastern Myanmar. Myanmar suffers from the longest-running civil war in the world — a complex, brutal conflict between the military regime and dozens of ethnic armed groups. Over the course of several trips, I witnessed how rebel factions survive and are killed in the remote jungle, how civilians are displaced by relentless airstrikes, and how local communities struggle to build alternative forms of governance amid state collapse.
